Yet Another Post on Feminism...

From Fendi to Jil Sander to Saint Laurent to Brian Atwood, heels are everywhere. Despite the December issue of ELLE, which included an article on the popularity of flats, there is no foreseeing a time when heeled shoes are not on the shop floor.

Perhaps it is due to my obsession with feminism at the moment- but heels are extremely important in the sense of women's fashion. This is due to the fact that heels are the one item of clothing men don't wear without trying to make a statement- similar to the fact that if a woman wore a tie it would raise questions. Heels are viewed as an extremely sexualised object, changing a woman's posture and elongating the legs they embody sexuality and femininity.

However, there seems to be this constant judgement on what women are trying to say about their sexuality through their dress. Recently, I have read countless articles about women wearing second-skin tight clothing and towering heels and thus they must be feeling sexy. Why do we feel the need to question how a woman is feeling through her clothing? Of course if a woman is wearing a mini-dress and heels we can assume, although not safely, that she is comfortable in her body; and if a woman is wearing baggy clothes it can be thought that she has something she feels she needs to hide. But, these are just assumptions, not necessarily accurate readings of the goings-on of a woman's mind.

We could consider that the most feminist way of thinking is to appreciate what a woman wears if we like it, and leave it at that. Who cares if she is subconsciously trying to emphasise her self-confidence through clothing, or that she is trying to hide the weight gain from just giving birth? If everyone in the world stopped judging people on why they are wearing a specific thing, and instead just focussed on the clothing itself, I can guess that would be one step closer to happiness for us all.

Just food for thought.

  1. people's judgment on styles and clothes in my opinion must be stopped. People now are not free to express their feelings and show what they like because of it :(
