The Archbishop of Canterbury speaks out about the symbol of the Cross in the foreword of his new book. He says "Are we now living with a symbol emptied of power by time and fashion? Christianity with a powerless Cross is Christianity without a throne for Christ or an aspiration for Christians.A Cross that has no weight is not worth carrying."
Being a girl who calls herself more of "a spiritual atheist", I'm not the biggest fan of religion on the whole but I believe each to their own and no judgement made. However, it appears the Archbishop of Canterbury feels differently... In Ruth P. Rubinstein says in Dress Codes: "Within Western culture crosses and other religious jewellery have always offered a protective measure; they make the individual feel less accessible to harm."
Until hearing this statement, I was used to society's consistent judgement on what other people choose to wear, but this has enraged me. The Archbishop of Canterbury here is assuming that:
1. These people that choose to wear crosses aren't religious themselves
2. A symbol, such as the cross, that is used universally can somehow be restricted to people only worthy of its use, and that he has the right to tell people who is worthy.

I'm not sure what I think about the Archbishop's statement without actually reading his book myself. I am a Christian and although I don't wear a cross I know plenty that do. I believe that Jesus died for everyone because he thinks us all worthy, including people that don't believe in him. My own personal issue regarding people that aren't Christian wearing crosses is why? Why wear a symbol of execution around your neck? But I don't lose sleep over it. The cross will never lose it's power since it's not dependent upon us but him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this very interesting and different blog post.

I think you're right and I agree with the bit of not losing sleep over it which is exactly my point. Although you are Christian and you have chosen not to wear a cross you have chosen not to judge those who do, that is beautiful to me. Thanks for commenting x
