Ridding New York of Racism

After an act of police racial profiling causing Barneys reputation to become blemished, Reverend Al Sharpton led a retail task force meeting to address issues such as these. The incident involved police outside Barneys detaining two black shoppers upon leaving Barneys after making expensive purchases.

The meeting was attended by a range of civil rights leaders and representatives from some of New York's biggest retailers, leading to a Customers' Bill of Rights that states key practices that all stores in the city should follow.

However, the Customers' Bill of Rights is voluntary and not legally binding, although many New York stores seem to be backing it. "We intend to stay on this until we can guarantee that racial profiling and 'shop and frisk' becomes something of the past."
