It is too easy to quote 'Fashions fade but style is eternal,' said by the infamous Yves Saint Laurent when discussing the over-discussed topic of the difference between style and fashion. But it is so much more than that; I would prefer to quote Oscar Wilde and say: 'Fashion is what wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what others wear.'
For instance, one of the many reasons we all know the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna and Kate Moss is because they had specific style. A style that stood out in their time as a pioneer for fashion movements that followed. Style is the pioneer of fashion. Or, you could say: style is dependent on the wearer: fashion is dependent on the politics. Style is something strangely individual; we all dress differently, even if it is only a minute detail in an outfit that tells it. However, the fashion of the time is entirely dependent on a delicate array of details: women's politics, men's politics, war, money, religion and the setting.
I am intrigued by style. Style is the one thing you are constantly trying to perfect when dressing, wondering what makes you you. So, when you next put on an outfit, wonder about why you are making the choices you are and what that says about you and your personal style.
Just food for thought.
